WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BONE HEALTH AND OSTEOPOROSIS

BONE HEALTH

Optimizing bone health isn't as simple as getting enough dietary calcium. Beyond the obvious importance of calcium, other factors, such as hormone balance, vitamin D and magnesium intake, Fulvic Acid and its delivery of "cell-ready" minerals and elements, absence of low-grade systemic inflammation, weight-bearing exercise, intestinal health, and Vitamin K2 affect bone health.

Vitamin K2 is probably the least understood of the factors. Vitamin K2 is required to activate Osteocalcin, an important protein secreted by osteoblasts, the body's bone-building cells. Osteocalcin can draw calcium into the bone matrix to build up bone.

In addition, vitamin K2, when combined with vitamin D3, helps inhibit cells called osteoclasts, the body's bone absorbing cells.3 Fosamax and other prescription medication work similarly by inhibiting osteoclasts that absorb bone, but unfortunately have no direct effect on the ability of osteoblasts to build bone.

There is a fine balance between the actions of osteoblasts (bone-building cells) and osteoclasts (bone-absorbing cells), both of which are needed for daily repair of bone tissue to keep bone health and strong. Vitamins K2 and D3 help to maintain this balance to prevent bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures.

Dietary vitamin K2 deficiencies are very prevalent. Vitamin K2 is required for calcium to be incorporated into the bone matrix.3 Calcium in the bone matrix is critical for strong bones and healthy bone density. OsteoWellness provides leading edge nutrition that includes vitamins K2 and D3, along with a special mineral group that support a healthy bone matrix.

Studies have been published on the importance of vitamins K2 and D3 intake to prevent fractures.

According to a recent study, the incidence of hip fractures in Japanese women seemed to be strongly influenced by their vitamin K2 intake.  Studies examining the influence of vitamin D and vitamin K intake in institutionalized elderly patients compared with home dwellers also showed that a higher intake of these nutrients reduced bone fractures.1

Since 1995, high doses of vitamin K2 supplements have become an approved treatment for osteoporosis in Japan where studies support its benefits in the prevention of further decline in bone mineral density. Some women have even experienced an increase in bone mass as a result of the intervention.1

HEART HEALTH

The same Osteocalcin Protein that vitamin K2 activates in bone also triggers the activation of another protein called Matrix GLA Protein (MGP) in soft tissues, such as arteries and veins.2

Vitamin K2's role takes on significant importance considering that about 20% of atherosclerotic plaques are comprised of calcium, from the early to the more advanced stages of heart disease development.2

Vitamin K2-activated MGP is considered the strongest factor in preventing, and possibly even reversing, tissue calcification involved in atherosclerosis, as described in the October 2008 issue of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Patients with diabetes have been shown to have lower MGP levels in their arteries, possibly contributing, at least partly, to the higher risk of arterial calcification and cardiovascular disease seen in the population.

Data from the Rotterdam Study, which followed more than 4,800 subjects aged 55 and older for up to 10 years, showed associations between vitamin K2 intake and aortic calcification.

Subjects diagnosed with severe aortic calcification had a lower intake of vitamin K2 compared with subjects with mild to moderate aortic calcification.4

WHY CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION IS NOT RECOMMENDED WITHOUT VITAMINS K2 AND D AND FULVIC MINERALS AND ELEMENTS

Many physicians recommend calcium supplements to postmenopausal women to help prevent or treat osteoporosis. But if women are deficient in vitamins K2 and D3, this may put them at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Calcium is the main mineral present in the bone matrix, but supplementing with it doesn't necessarily result in stronger bones if it accumulates in veins and arteries instead of in bones.

A combination of K2, D3, Fulvic, and other minerals and elements Fulvic naturally carries makes for very important partners in effective calcium and mineral supplementation.

OsteoWellness is superior to other calcium and mineral supplements on the market today. Not only does it provide Comprehensive Nutritional Support replacing any multivitamin and mineral supplement, it also provides advanced bone density and cardiovascular support too. It's a winning combination to help you live a healthy independent lifestyle!

The Methylation and Methionine Cycles

The Methylation and Methionine Cycles are biochemical pathways that manage or contribute to a wide range of crucial bodily functions. To operate, they need the natural forms of B vitamins. These functions include:

NEW CELL SYNTHESIS AND REPAIR DNA AND RNA SYNTHESIS

The methylation pathway makes the building blocks (purines and pyrimidines) needed for new DNA and RNA synthesis. A reduced capacity for new DNA and RNA synthesis means that any new cell synthesis is impaired. New cells mean healing and rejuvenated tissues.

Protects the body's telomeres. Methylation is involved in the elimination of the "tails on its DNA and chromosomes that are called telomeres. This has significant anti-aging effects.

Methylation is a key step in the formation of our enzymes and proteins. This process is called genetic transcription. It involves first making a copy of the DNA, which is called RNA. This is the blueprint, as it were, for our proteins. Then the body uses this blueprint to put together the exact protein that is necessary. Protein production, such as of hormones and neurotransmitters, are critical to maintain health and a sense of well-being.

DETOXIFICATION

Methylation is a primary method of removing toxins in the phase 2 liver detoxification system of the body. More precisely, methylation converts toxins of all kinds from insoluble, less soluble, or fat-soluble compounds into water-soluble compounds. This, in turn, allows the body to eliminate them much more easily.

Methylation, in this sense, is somewhat like first tagging toxic substances and then altering them in a way that allows the body to identify them as toxins, and then to eliminate them rapidly and simply. Larger molecules are then able to be eliminated through the bile, while smaller ones pass into the bloodstream and are removed by the kidneys in the urine.

MOOD BALANCING - NEUROTRANSMITTER SYNTHESIS AND UTILIZATION.

Methylation is part of the synthesis of dopamine and serotonin and other neurotransmitters. These hormones are the "feel good" hormones.

SAMe or S-AdensylMethionine is the Master Methylator - a methyl donor once it has been restored to functioning by the action of the methylation cycle. It is used a supplement, at times, that helps to prevent depression in some people and it has a variety of other mental and physical effects on the body.

Methylation and ADD/ADHD. Folate (not folic acid found in supplements and food additives, unless the body can convert it, which 30-40% of us can't) is essential in the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine. By genetically limiting the production of methylfolate, the patient secondarily limits the production of dopamine.Low dopamine levels affect focus, concentration, organization, short-term memory, vestibulo-visual interaction, sleep patterns, emotional stability, and even hormonal regulation. Altered levels of dopamine additionally affect the levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Imbalances in this biochemical region, dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine are implicated in ADD/ADHD. Methylation cycle function is needed to produce SAMe as a methyl donor for the dopamine/ norepinephrine / epinephrine pathways that may help patients recover from ADD/ADHD.

IMMUNE FUNCTION

Methylation is involved in the production of new immune cells called T cells. As a result, methylation defects may result in a lack of immune system regulatory cells.

Methylation also plays a role in the ability of the immune system to recognize foreign bodies or antigens so it can respond to threats.

Research has shown that methylation is decreased in humans with auto immune conditions. Impaired methylation of T cells may be involved in the production of auto antibodies. Studies from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have shown that their T cells are under methylated.

Many autoimmune patients have methylation defects or a lack of methyl groups.

ENERGY PRODUCTION

Methylation pathways are required to make Coenzyme Q10. This vital substance is needed for heart health and for energy production within the mitochondria.

Adequate levels of CoQ10 have been identified as necessary nutrients to help prevent congestive heart failure. Clinically, CoQ10 has been used in the treatment of angina, heart failure prevention of reperfusion injury after coronary artery bypass, and cardiomyopathy.

The synthesis of CoQ10 in the body requires components of the methylation pathway; in particular it requires adequate levels of SAMe that are generated by the methylation cycle. Cholesterol lowering drugs (statin drugs) decrease the level of CoQ10 in the body. It may be particularly important for individuals taking statin drugs to be aware of the methylation status in their body and replenish CoQ10.
